IELTS and TOEFL are the world's premier English proficiency exams, accepted globally by academic institutions, employers, and immigration bodies to evaluate non-native English speakers.
Available in Paper & Computer-delivered formats. Measures your English proficiency on a 9-band scale across four communicative skills.
Primarily a computer-based internet exam (iBT). It evaluates your ability to combine your listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills in an academic setting.
IELTS uses standard English variants (British, Australian, American) and features a face-to-face speaking test. TOEFL is heavily based on American English, and all responses, including speaking, are recorded digitally on a computer.
Core Skills Tested in Both Exams
Text Comprehension
Tests your ability to read academic texts, grasp the primary arguments, identify writer assumptions, and decode complex vocabulary.
Aural Processing
Evaluates your understanding of spoken English in conversational and classroom setups, assessing accents, attitudes, and purpose.
Verbal Delivery
Tests pronunciation, structural coherence, and grammatical control. IELTS features an interviewer; TOEFL uses computer microphone recording.
Writing Section Structure
- IELTS Task 1: Synthesizing/describing a chart, table, graph, or process diagram in 150 words.
- IELTS Task 2: Writing an academic essay response to a point of view, argument, or problem in 250 words.
- TOEFL Integrated Task: Writing a response based on a short passage you read and a lecture you listen to.
- TOEFL Academic Discussion: Stating and supporting an opinion in an online classroom forum discussion setting.
Exam Structure Comparison
Total Duration
IELTS takes approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes (the Speaking module may be scheduled on a different day). TOEFL iBT takes about 2 hours to complete.
Scoring Systems
IELTS is graded on a scale of 0 to 9 band score (with half-band intervals). TOEFL iBT is scored from 0 to 120 (30 marks per section).
Validity
Scores for both IELTS and TOEFL exams are universally valid for a period of 2 years from the date of the test.

IELTS Accents
You will hear a variety of English accents (British, Australian, New Zealand, American) in the Listening module.
TOEFL Keyboard
TOEFL iBT is taken entirely on standard QWERTY keyboards, making typing speed and accuracy highly relevant.
IELTS Paper Option
If you prefer manual writing, IELTS is one of the few global options still offering a physical paper-based test.
Speaking Differences
TOEFL speaking prompts are integrated (require reading and listening first), whereas IELTS is a direct conversational interview.
Grading Bodies
IELTS is jointly managed by the British Council and IDP. TOEFL is developed and administered solely by ETS.
Universal Acceptance
While TOEFL has traditionally been preferred in the US, both exams are now widely accepted worldwide.
